Point Mongor?

From a faithful reader who signed this E-mail "Point Mongoring":

Hello, I read somewhere on this site about the term point monger or someone that points to much. This term bothers me. Cricket is a game where pointing someone is part of the game. If you feel someone is pointing to much then you are probably not good enough to beat that person anyway.

Let me give you an example. If someone starts a game of cricket with trip 20, trip 20, trip 20 you might think "what a point monger" but first off it is a great shot. There is nothing your opponent can throw to get ahead of you. Three trip 19's will only give you a closed nineteen and 114 points to your opponents 120 points. Advantage: Opponent.

The object of Cricket is to stay ahead of your opponent on marks and points. My personal objective is to try and stay ahead of my opponent by 4 marks. But...If you stay on one number and "point to much" you are helping your opponent(if he/she is smart) by keeping other numbers open for them to close and point on. If both players are of equal talent the smarter darter will prevail in most cases and by smarter I mean pointing correctly.

When I have 1 dart in my hand and I can not close a number with one dart(meaning a single) I will point to force my opponent to stay on a number that he/she had already closed to keep them from closing other numbers therefore slowing their progress in ending the game. My whole point here (no pun intended) is learn the game of cricket first as there are many strategies involved (some better then others) and deal with the point monger the best way you can! You can do this by throwing better than you opponent. Do not complain about the way someone throws when you can not control it. Play smart by using a better strategy and hitting the numbers you are throwing at and you will overcome your fear of the dreaded "point monger".

May the darts be with you.
