Guidelines for the Scorekeeper

Thank you for stepping up to the board to "chalk" a match. The passionate darter not only plays in competition, but also keeps score for their fellow steel-tip darters... In competition, scorekeepers are needed so that the darters can concentrate on their matches. Your role is very important and here are some guidelines to be the best scorekeeper that you can be.

  1. Do not talk, drink or smoke while keeping score.
  2. Do remain still so you're not a distraction to the darters.
  3. Do not look at the shooter, but face the board.
  4. Do not call out the score of any darts unless asked and do not offer strategy suggestions (even when the darter is obviously shooting at the wrong out).
  5. The scorekeeper may inform the thrower what he has scored and what he has left, when asked.
  6. Do not change a score if the darter has shot again and a second score has been written down.
  7. Do not record any bounce-outs as a scoring dart.
  8. The score of a dart is determined from the side of the wire at which the point of the dart has entered the board.
  9. Do not show any signs of disgust or excitement when scoring.
  10. Always keep the darters on the same side of the scoreboard, for all matches, no matter who wins the diddle or who is starting first. If Team A is on the left hand side of the scoreboard for the 1st game, then Team A should be on the left hand side of the scoreboard for all remaining games.
  11. It is the responsibility of the thrower to verify his score before removing the darts from the board. The score remains as written when one or more darts have been removed from the board. Errors in arithmetic must stand as written, unless corrected prior to the beginning of that player's next throw. In the case of doubles/team matches, such errors must be rectified prior to the next turn of the partner/player on that team.
Don't forget to do your fair share and step up to the board to "chalk" a match. For the darters who have just finished a match...after shaking the hand of your opponent(s) to say "Good Darts" be sure to thank the scorekeeper. And if you're so inclined, buy them a coke or a beer. As always, good luck and I'll see you at the line.
