Darter at the Line - New Feature!
Sherilyn's Introduction...
This is a special feature kind of like "Man on the Street" except this is being called "Darter at the Line!" This is where darters answer brief questions on the fly and they are published right here for everyone to read. My first darter to volunteer for this new section is "Mean Irene" Goodwin from Alaska! Irene was one of my very first website interview subjects and we got along splendidly through E-mail and have stayed in touch over the years...Naturally, I asked her some questions for this new feature, and she was nice enough to provide some pictures as well as providing an introduction. Without further adieu, here is this new feature section titled "Darter at the Line" starting today with "Mean Irene" Goodwin...

Irene's Introduction...
WooHoo! I get a line???? Sure I'll write something up....Let's see. I see potential darters everywhere, and my favorite tee-shirt says "I SEE DART PEOPLE". I think the best way to promote darts is through good sportsmanship and encouragement. By that I mean encouraging the newbie player to keep at it, and also, encouraging the world class player to keep at it. There's always room for improvement, but what if you've improved to the point that no one wants to be your opponent? This happens to really good players on a local level, and I say it is the fault of the local leagues that don't encourage these shooters to go to the next level. And by that, I mean the leagues should join ADO thereby providing the way for these shooters to get to the next level. I guess this is getting too wordy, but hopefully, you know what I mean. Oh, and you never know who you'll meet at the line, so it's okay to lose if you lose honestly and graciously.
Hopefully this is what you meant Sherilyn...Keep Shooting Straight!

"Mean Irene" Together with Paul Seigel, AKA Dartoid

"Mean Irene" Goodwin together with Dartoid at the Chicken Coop Open in '2006. Dear Dartoid, "Mean Irene" calls this published picture of you as revenge for the games that you took off her and for saying that "Mean Irene" lost both her arms frog gigging...(For those of you unfamiliar with the term "frog gigging" Paul is implying that "Mean Irene" couldn't throw darts because maybe she had been doing some sort of backwoods activity while in the Ozarks...) Read Dartoid's article (see his column in Bull's Eye News Magazine) titled "Wimenfolk, Rumpelmint and DARTS in the Ozarks, Column #269 dated 08/01/2006).
Still, "Mean Irene" thinks you're a riot Dartoid!

"Mean Irene" Answers the Questions of the Day...
1) Why do you love darts?
Reply: I love darts because each dart I throw is a personal quest for the perfectly thrown dart. It's like a mystery that I feel compelled to solve! Why did that last dart fly to the left of the mark? Why did the one before it go straight to the target? It's a personal quest for me. Of course, physical limitations have come into play as I've had problems with frozen shoulder, tendonitis, and old age.
I also love darts because it gives me the perfect excuse to get out of the house and be around fellow darters, most of whom don't really care to be that competitive, but a few who are as committed to improving their game as I am.
And further, I love darts because almost anyone can be competitive. You'll recall my dart buddy Paul who is legally blind. He's going to be subbing this season on my dart team. True, I have to pick him up and deliver him back home on the nights he plays, but, hey, he's worth it.
2. What is your favorite game and why?
Reply: My favorite game of darts is '01 - double in, double out. The format in the Pioneer Dart Association is 1001, 501, and 301. Every match is double in, double out. I really love Cricket, also, and when I warm up, I only target the Cricket numbers. This saves my shoulder from throwing too many darts in a warm-up session, and it also keeps my darts sharp for the occasional Cricket game after the league play is over.
3. What advice do you have for the beginner?
Reply: My advice to beginners is to get into the habit of thinking like an athlete. Do warm up stretches before starting a long session of darts, and then do cool down stretches afterwards. I know I need to do these stretches, and still I forget. When I feel my arm and shoulder starting to ache, I immediately do a few stretches to ward off disaster later. But since I never bothered to think like an athlete, I never got into the habit of warm ups and cool downs. Physical therapy is no fun, either, so I recommend newbies get in the habit at the very start of their darting careers.
More information can found on-line if you Google "throwing injuries" or "dart throwing injuries".
My special thanks for "Mean Irene's pictures and her replies...We have been in touch through E-mail and the Internet, since the very beginning of my website and I know firsthand that "Mean Irene" is definitely a "Passionate Darter!" While technology today is wonderful, I am looking forward to the day when I meet "Mean Irene" in person!
As always, shoot well and I'll see you at the line.
