How I Got Started in Darts by Joe Dabrowski
My entry into darts may be like most players or may me a little more unusual.
Way back in 1982, my close friend, Mark Malmberg loved to play the original "Pac Man" video game.
Because this was years before the Playstations and Xboxs, the only way you could play was in a game arcade or local pub. We went to Butch McGuires on Rand Road in Mount Prospect to play Pac Man. Mark was excellent at Pac Man, I was bad at the game. To the left of the Pac Man machines were 2 steel tip dart boards. Mark and I then met Bud Kozor, one of Butch McGuires league players. Bud taught both Mark and I the rules of the game and we played at Butch's most of that summer.
In late August, two guys came into the dartboard area looking at the scoreboards and dartboards. The first person was Herb Brant a Director of CAAD (Chicago Area Associated Darters), which would later become Windy City Darters. The second person was Gordon Koch, door man at Butch McGuires, and their team captain.
At the end of the night Gordon said to both Mark and I, "O.K. you guys. Be here Monday night by 8:00 P.M. Bring $10.00 with you. Practice your double outs."
