Recently I received a note from a left-handed darter looking for advice. Not throwing lefty myself, I consulted with KarlHeinz who had a few words of wisdom for this left handed darter.
- An exercise is to throw with your eyes closed - as you are much more aware of what you are doing with your eyes closed, and imagine a string in a straight line to the board.
- Videotape oneself from a profile standpoint to pick up on things you aren't aware of.
- Moving on the line is what I would suggest if the darter is on with all the rest of his/her shots. And there is the possibility that this darter stands very frontal to the board, so I also would suggest that if this is the case he should try to increase his shoulder angle.
The point is that when you go for different sides of the board without moving on the line, the shoulder angle changes, naturally and almost unconsciously, and such a change can include replacement of the balance foot to hold the correct balance and angles. However, with a very frontal stance there is more weight on the balance foot which means that it won't adapt automatically. This source of error will be eliminated when the darter gets into the habit of moving on the oche, while the more problematic solution with the change of stance should be tried when he can't cope with moving, or if he still is in a beginner phase.
Thanks to KarlHeinz for his input and as always, good luck and I'll see you at the line.
