Being a Team Captain, by Diane Somers

I think being a Captain needs to be put to a person who is responsible, dedicated, and LOVES darts.

First, it is the responsibility of the Captain to get a team together that will be reliable, competitive and fun at the same time. Not always that easy...Then you need to make it to the Captain's meeting for the season's schedule.

Second, it is the responsibility of the Captain to make sure that the individual fees are sent in (should be on time). Many times I put my own money in and had the players pay me back so that the money would be in on time. Again, I had people on the team that I knew and trusted whom would give me the money when they had it.

Third, and this one was very difficult and that is doing the line-up for who shoots what and when. First you have to look at who shows up for the night (there were always emergencies or people working late). Then, after you determine who is there, you need to determine how you want to play them. Anyone can have a good or bad day. I try to make sure that everyone shoots at least once within the first 3 or 4 games, then go by how they are shooting to determine who will shoot and what they will shoot, for the rest of the night. This does not always make everyone happy but a team player understands that even though you want to have fun, you are also there to win.

Fourth, is to make sure that all the paperwork is filled out. Calls made when the night is a win. Getting signatures, sending in paperwork on time and going to more meetings if you make the playoffs.

Then! Start all over again the next season.

Being a Captain carries a lot of responsibility and not everyone can do that. Some do not realize the pressure that can be put on a Captain.

Would I do it again? Not sure. I think I want to just enjoy the playing of the game. The paperwork was not a hassle for me so I would help out the Captain of my team by doing that. I actually enjoyed that!
